"CRISIS IN CARE"
KYLAN SATTLER
My project considers the dichotomy of the intimate and the macro through the lens of recontextualized portraiture. Historically, portraits focused on the individual, their expressions, and features. My work seeks to redefine the portrait by reframing the subject within a wider field of view. Removing the boundaries in which the subject traditionally exists allows us to see the larger social frameworks where the intimacy of the individual resides.
The forms that the work takes depends on the subject. Through investigation I find which media best communicate the content. Past work include: Portraits of A Commodity, a mixed-media installation concerning the abstraction of the individual within surveillance-capitalism, Art World Connections, a documentation of personal correspondence and institutional critique, and Entropic Dreams, an experimental video portrait on trauma and memory. Having a background as a painter, I found myself limited in the scope of inquiry regarding larger social frameworks. I find that deciding on a medium is not an immediate necessity. Researching a specific crisis reveals its specific necessity for voice.
Within an art historical context, my project situates itself in dialogue with Chris Marker’s
contemplative essay-format videos, Hito Steyerl’s transmogrificative critique of technocapitalism, and Hans Haacke’s incisive critique of the institutions of art. Portraiture is a lens through which my work investigates the intimate crisis in relation to the macro crisis.
